The Hurunui District
Approximately 45 minutes north of Christchurch, on the way to Hanmer Springs, the Hurunui district is bordered to the west by the snow-capped Southern Alps and to the east by waters of the Pacific. A small area, Hurunui is at its heart a classic rural area, enjoying hot summers and frosty winters. The perfect place to stop on the way to or returning from Hanmer, or a comfortable daytime sojourn in its own right.

What would 1800s Hurunui be without a local swagger man? Here, at the Hurunui Village, Hurunui Jack and his trusty mate Wag the dog are all part of the fun. The swagger is an icon of this era, notoriously a bushman whom carries a swag and travels on foot.
